"Teen Mom" "16 & Pregnant" and "Juno" are television shows, and movie that expose teen
pregnancy. In our generation there have been many teenagers getting pregnant, from 13-17 years old.
Teen pregnancy has not only happen for couple of years, but throughout time the percentage
has increased. Teen Pregnancy has increased in many high school due to media, family backgrounds, and trends with peers.
Teen Pregnancy has increased because of the media. There are certain shows that come out on television showing that teen pregnancy can be a hard change in a teenager's life, but the show does not always let the teenagers see the real pain, the struggles and everything teenager goes through: "With 'Teen Mom' you are playing with real lives here-the lives of real women and their children" (Gail-Dines qtd. In The American Conservation, 2011). This shows that these television programs make teen pregnancy look like a joke like if it's something to play with when it's not. Another reason is teenagers look up to certain celebrities on TV now since the media has taken a big part of today's society. "You know, you got to "Juno," or you got such and such movie and you see such movie and such on a TV shows and you go, oh , OK, I'm going to do that, you know, direct cause and effect"(Brown-Sarah qtd. In Talk to the Nation, 2008). This shows how teens do get influenced by the media. It also shows how certain television programs are using teen mom as a game when its reality,"...Jamie Lynn Spears, who just, at the age of 17, just had a birth"(Brown-Sarah qtd. In Talk to the Nation, 2008). This piece of evidence is really strong because there are a lot of little girls that look up to this celebrity and they see that she has a baby and most girls want to grow up and be like the people they admire the people they look up to and with them making decisions like this makes the teens get pregnant because they think life would be easy as the celebrities but what they don't think of is the money that they will need to be able to feed a baby also their education would either be put on hold or they will not finish.
Family background is also a reason for why teen pregnancy has increased. A teen can be going through a lot of things or certain problems and think that getting pregnant is the only way to get out the house. " I had an alcoholic father and I had to get out of my house or it's-I had to" (Karen qtd. In Talk to the Nation, 2008). Alcoholic parents or drug addict parents who don't give their children attention can lead them to get pregnant and the parents end up kicking them out of the house because that would be just another mouth to feed. Alcoholic parents can also led to teen girls getting rape. The people they grew up with might have had child at a young age too. " Their mother may have been a teen mother herself" (Brown-Sarah qtd. In Talk of the Nation, 2008). This piece of evidence shows that teens may have turn to different elements to either get attention from their parents or to get away from problems that may have been going on in their household at the time. "Children need deep amounts of love and support-but almost invariably they will say, I wish I had waited" (Brown-Sarah qtd. In The Talk of the Nation, 2008). Most teens need certain amount of attention from their parents so they won't do these types of decisions which only make their life hard especially at the age they are and makes them realize that things would have been better if they would have just taken their time and not hurry anything up.
Trends between peers have been a very much discussed reason to influence girls getting pregnant and have their babies at the same time. "This week, Time magazine published a story about 17 teenage girls at Gloucester High School in Massachusetts who, it said, got together to form a pregnancy pact" (Talk to the Nation, 2008). These girls don't have a clue on what they get themselves into when they create pregnancy pacts. they think it will be cute for them to get pregnant and have their babies at the same time which is not. It only makes them lose opportunities that they might only get once and not again. People do not even know why do these thoughts go through a young teen girls head, when it should be focus on trying to finish school and getting a good career and be something in life. Most teen girls may also get the idea from other girls and they decide that they want to be like them and they end up doing the same mistake.
This topic contains a lot of view points and connections. The way that I can connect this topic to myself would be that i have a really close friend that got pregnant and she did not finish school. It wasn't intentional for her to get pregnant. Also, there are a lot of teen mothers in the school I'm attending which got pregnant at a very young age. There are many teenage girls around the world getting pregnant due to family background, trends and media. The bigger is to talk to the teens about sex, let them know what can happen and give them a place where they can go and get condoms to stay protected. This issue is important because there are a lot of teens not finishing school and they do not have enough knowledge to get a great job that can support them and their child.
